I remember noticing the physical change of the town but not too many other details. I decided to do some research on the history of Whaler’s Wharf after a weekend visit in October. The story of Dave the Nightwatchman really moved me . Your story about him is so important. I’m not a Cape native but it’s in my blood at this point. I still get the gut-wrenching pit in my stomach when I have to leave. And Dave’s story reminds me of that. I believe humans can develop a spiritual connection with non-living things and places, which Dave seemed to have had with the Wharf and town itself. If those things are taken from a person or removed from their lives, the effect can be devastating. Thank you for keeping Dave’s memory alive while providing a unique perspective on the fire of 1998.

Thanks for your feedback on my post. I often think back to Provincetown and how special those times were. I’m still occasionally in touch with Jan and Wendy, but could stand to send them a letter. Some things never change. I don’t think Jan will ever get an email address or use the internet. Every so often I visit P-Town and bump into Marcel and Nico (Nick).

I don’t recognize your name, but would probably know you if I saw you 🙂 I was with Dale and Ricardo in Tucson Az. when Whaler’s Wharf burned down. We put Dale on a plane the next morning and drove straight back to Ptown. It was so devastating to see the Wharf afterwards. We all spent months afterwards digging through the rubble for Dale. I really think that the heart of Ptown was destroyed when the Wharf burned down.I worked with him in the shacks on the property the next summer and ended up opening a gallery on the 2nd floor of the new building. You are right that it was not anything like the real Whaler’s Wharf. No wonderful atmosphere…Provincetown is no longer the awesome fun place I have loved for so long…I finally left town and moved to The Mojave Desert in 2003, but am still homesick…So thank you for your nice story, you really captured the essence of Whaler’s Wharf and my buddy Dave.
